Visit the 8th-century mud-brick fortress ruins of Khar Balgas, capital of the Uyghur Khaganate, followed by the Khushuu Tsaidam Museum to see ancient Turkic stone monuments and runic inscriptions. On the return drive to Ulaanbaatar, take in scenic steppe views as you pass by the shores of Lake Ugii, a freshwater haven famous for migratory birdlife.
