Khustain Nuruu National Park: Sanctuary of the Wild Steppe

Spanning over 50,000 hectares 500 km² roughly 100 kilometers southwest of Ulaanbaatar, protects a crucial ecological transition zone where the vast Central Asian steppe meets the northern Khentii mountain forests. Defined by rolling mountain grassland, birch forest, and the Tuul River flowing along its southern border, the park reaches elevations up to 1,800 meters above sea level. Initially protected as a nature reserve in 1993 and elevated to National Park status in 1998, Hustai is recognized globally as a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve. Human history runs deep across these valleys, as the land holds ancient burial sites, Bronze Age deer stones, and the famous Ongot Monuments—an archaeological complex from the 6th–8th century Turkic Khaganate featuring stone human figures carved over a millennium ago.

The centerpiece of Hustai's conservation legacy is the Takhi, or Przewalski’s horse, the world's only remaining true wild horse species that has never been domesticated. Unlike feral horses like Mustangs or Brumbies which descended from domestic stock, the Takhi possesses 66 chromosomes compared to the domestic horse's 64 and represents an unbroken wild lineage. After being declared extinct in the wild in the late 1960s due to overhunting, severe winters, and habitat loss, an ambitious international reintroduction program was launched in 1992 using animals raised in European zoos. Today, Hustai shelters the largest self-sustaining population of Takhi in the world, with hundreds of wild horses roaming freely in organized breeding harems.

Because the park is strictly managed and protected from poaching and overgrazing, the rest of the local ecosystem has thrived into a sanctuary for wildlife. Powerful gray wolf packs patrol the mountain ridges and valleys, serving as the park's primary apex predator. Visitors often spot grand herds of red deer, agile roe deer, Siberian marmots, gazelles, and corsac foxes across the terrain. The skies and rocky crags above are equally active, hosting over 200 bird species including massive birds of prey like Golden Eagles, Cinereous Vultures, and Saker Falcons.

What sets Hustai apart from many other protected areas in Asia is its unique operational model. Managed by the Hustai National Park Trust, an independent non-governmental organization, the park operates without state subsidies and funds its wildlife research, anti-poaching patrols, and community programs through ecotourism. Every visitor who enters the reserve directly contributes to preserving these wild landscapes and the species that depend on them.

ホスタイ・ヌルー国立公園：野生の大草原の聖域

ウランバートルから南西に約100キロメートル、5万ヘクタール（500km²）以上にわたって広がるフスタイン・ヌルー国立公園は、広大な中央アジアの大草原（ステップ）と北部のヘンティー山脈の森林地帯が交わる、非常に重要な生態系移行帯（エコトーン）を保護しています。なだらかな山岳草原、シラカバの林、そして南側の境界沿いを流れるトゥール川に縁どられたこの公園は、標高最大1,800メートルに達します。1993年に自然保護区に指定され、1998年に国立公園へと昇格したフスタイは、ユネスコの生物圏保存地域（マブ計画）としても世界的に認められています。この地域の谷々には深い人道史が刻まれており、古代の埋葬塚や青銅器時代の鹿石、そして1000年以上前に彫られた石人像が立ち並ぶ6〜8世紀の突厥（トゥルク）時代の遺跡「オンゴット遺跡」など、貴重な歴史遺産が点在しています。

フスタイの保全活動における象徴的な存在が、家畜化されたことのない世界で唯一の野生馬「タヒ（タヒ／プレジワルスキー馬）」です。マスタングやブランビーのように、かつて家畜化された馬が野生化した「野生化馬」とは異なり、タヒは染色体を66本持っており（家畜馬は64本）、途切れることのない純粋な野生の血統を保っています。乱獲、厳しい冬、そして生息地の喪失により1960年代後半に野生絶滅と宣言された後、1992年にヨーロッパの動物園で飼育されていた個体を用いて野心的な国際再導入プログラムが始動しました。現在、フスタイには世界最大規模の自立したタヒの群れが生息しており、数百頭の野生馬がハーレム（繁殖群）を形成して自由に駆け回っています。

公園が厳重に管理され、密猟や過放牧から保護されているため、地域の生態系全体が野生動物の楽園として豊かに繁栄しています。強力なタイリクオオカミのパック（群れ）が尾根や谷を巡回し、公園の頂点捕食者としての役割を果たしています。また、訪れる人々は、アカシカの巨大な群れ、しなやかなノロジカ、シベリアタルバガン（マーモット）、ガゼル、コサックギツネなどの姿を頻繁に目にするでしょう。空や切り立った岩山も賑やかで、イヌワシ、ハゲワシ、ハヤブサの一種であるサーカーハヤブサなどの大型猛禽類をはじめ、200種以上の野鳥が生息しています。

フスタイがアジアの他の多くの保護区と一線を画しているのは、そのユニークな運営モデルにあります。非政府組織（NGO）である「フスタイ国立公園トラスト」によって管理されているこの公園は、国の補助金を受けることなく運営されており、野生生物の研究、密猟防止パトロール、地域社会への支援プログラムなどの資金をエコツアーの収益でまかなっています。ここを訪れる一人ひとりの旅行者が、この雄大な自然とそこに生きる生き物たちを守ることに直接貢献しています。
