Review

Journey from Ulaanbaatar to Khustai National Park, where you will stay in a traditional nomadic ger, ride horses through vast steppes, spot wild Takhi horses, and experience morning herding chores.

Main destination

A 2 day Odyssey to Khustai National Park Leaving the bustling urban energy of Ulaanbaatar behind, the road west opens up into a vast sea of emerald hills and endless blue sky. Just a short drive from the capital lies Khustai National Park—one of Mongolia’s premier conservation success stories and an ideal quick escape for travelers seeking genuine nomadic culture and wild encounters. Your journey begins as you settle into a traditional felt ger hosted by a local nomadic family. The hospitality is immediate, warm, and deeply comforting. Before long, you're sitting down to a rustic, authentic feast of rich, dried meat soup, alongside golden, crisp khuushuur. By afternoon, it’s time to embrace the spirit of the steppe. Mounted on a sturdy Mongolian horse, you ride across sweeping open pastures guided by local herders whose families have ridden these paths for centuries. But the true highlight awaits in the late afternoon as you venture deeper into the park’s protected core. Here, wild Takhi—the rare Przewalski’s horse—roam freely across the ridgelines alongside herds of red deer and inquisitive Siberian marmots. Watching these stocky, golden-brown wild horses graze against the setting sun is a memory that stays with you long after you crawl into your cozy ger for a night under a blanket of stars. Morning on the steppe arrives with the gentle sounds of livestock and the rich aroma of boiling milk. You'll rise early to witness the morning rhythm of nomadic life firsthand—helping milk the cows, watching raw milk transform into fresh orom clotted cream, and lending a hand with daily chores. After a hearty lunch of homemade tsuivan—savory hand-cut noodles tossed with meat and vegetables—it’s time to journey back to the capital, carrying with you the undeniable magic of Mongolia’s untamed wilderness.
